Matsapha Town Council took to the streets of Matsapha to pick up litter, especially non-biodegradable products like plastics. This was in line with the national theme in commemoration of World Environment Day which was “Beat Plastic Pollution”.

The cleaning campaign was strategically planned to ensure that different areas within and outside the town of Matsapha are cleaned.  A total of four groups were formed which were divided according to the areas that were targeted for the clean-up. The sites targeted starting from Mahhala included, the town of Matsapha, routes between Ka-Ndlunganye following the MR3 highway; another leading towards UNISWA and finally along Mathangeni leading to the Civic Centre.

Matsapha Town Council worked in collaboration with UNISWA Green Team, U-Save and local school Tubungu High School. The town’s Mayor, Sandlane Zwane acknowledge the presences of the youth and encouraged them to keep the environment clean. His words were echoed by SEA representative, Mr Nsibandze who emphasized that the youth need to take the lead as they are the generation that will be left behind to take care of the environment.

Representative from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Steven Khumalo highlighted that the amount of money spent on waste management, would not be necessary if people took it upon themselves to make sure they use reusable products, unlike plastics. Khumalo encouraged the public apply the following 3 points:

  1. To be a good citizen, explaining that good citizens are those that contribute to the strength of a country.
  2. Adopt a positive attitude which would encourage the need of recycling
  3. Strive to be better by eliminating bad habits.
