A Safer Matsapha This Festive Season

This time of year is all about joy and festivities, but it is also a time to be wary of criminal activities happening all around, even in places where least expected. It is on that note that Matsapha Town Council in collaboration with Royal Eswatini Police held a Matsapha Festive Crime Prevention Workshop, on the 7th of December 2018, in preparation to strengthen security in Matsapha these holidays.

The objective of this meeting was to engage security organizations, community police, Fire Emergency services and communities in Matsapha in pursuit of curbing crime around Matsapha, within town and residential areas. In this forum different ways were explored on how to synchronize crime prevention and safety initiatives. Crime hotspots were identified where security would be tightened and common gang groups were identified like the ‘K9” group.

The Council values the safety of all those who live and visit in Matsapha, therefore beyond just hosting the workshop, purchased security batons and handcuffs for the community police who did not have security equipment.

It also important for the public to note the following strategies, which can help them avoid being victims of crime this festive season. These include:

  • Reduce or avoid opportunities that may make you a target.
  • Beware of your surroundings at all times and travel in groups if possible.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
  • Check that you are not being followed after using an ATM or leaving the bank. These are commonly referred to “boLandela
  • Make sure you lock all doors and windows. When locking car door look out for remote jamming.
  • If you will be away these holidays, inform and request your neighbour, to help be on the lookout.

While we are focused on crime victimization strategies, we need to make sure that we remain safe at all times. The Fire Emergency Services shared a few safety practices. These include:

  • Avoid overloading plugs.
  • Do not leave plugged appliances unattended
  • Make sure all Christmas decorations are correctly plugged to avoid fires

Should any emergencies arise, call the police on 999 or 9999 and fire emergency 933. Matsapha wishes all a safe festive season.
